It cannot be called “sacrifice” if we are not giving up something in our lives that is costly. If the giving is easy, then there is no sacrifice to be made. Many Christians could be considered giving people, but can we be characterized as being sacrificial people?
We may faithfully tithe every week, but is the tithe part of the budget, or is it a weekly act of sacrifice? We may volunteer a few hours on a Sunday, but is it a routine, or an invested role of sacrifice? This isn’t to say that we are called to sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice. When we look at Jesus, his sacrifice was part of God’s great plan of salvation, not something he did individually to fulfill his obedience to God. When we hear sermons about sacrifice, we can often respond with acts of sacrifice for the sake of being sacrificial. God calls us to sacrifice because it forces us into deeper trust in him. Sacrifice pushes us into a state of humility where our pride has to be nailed to the cross.
True sacrifice will cost time, money, pride, reputation, comfort, security, resources, relationships, and more. It will force us to be open-handed with the gifts God has given us and confront those things that we have been worshipping as idols in our lives. As we willingly sacrifice, we will find the freedom that Jesus promised.
DISCUSSION/REFLECTION QUESTION: What is God asking you to sacrifice? How are you responding?
